Moon Phase Viewer with a Hawaiian Twist!

  • Displays the current moon phase accurately, calculated from a 3-D model of the earth-moon-sun geometry. The precise calculations consider orbital characteristics like inclination, distance, obliquity, nutation, and libration. Optionally, it can factor in the device's location on Earth. Provides in-depth ephemeris data on separate detail pages. No network connection required; all calculations are performed locally within the app.
  • Predicts the traditional Hawaiian lunar calendar day name based on calculations for the astronomical full moon near the beginning of the Hawaiian day Hoku. Hawaiian days conclude at sunset, following a different timeline than midnight.
  • Enables two-finger pinch-zoom gesture for easy navigation.
  • Offers an animation feature allowing users to watch moon phases evolve over time by choosing "Animate" from the action menu. Tap to pause animation and double-tap to reset to the current time, rotation, and zoom level. Access additional options via the information icon located in the lower-right corner.
  • The details page illustrates various moon ephemeris calculations for the selected date and time. Users can customize display priority by reordering or deleting items from the list. Copy values to the clipboard by performing a long press on the desired item.
  • Automatic moon image rotation on the Phase tab if motion sensors are enabled. For manual rotation when Location Services are off, utilize a two-finger rotate gesture.
  • Presents upcoming moon phases with dates and times on the Upcoming tab with optional real-time notifications for imminent phases, including "super moons."
  • View a full year's moon phases on the Calendar tab; swipe left or right to navigate between years.
  • Includes a Today widget for instant display of the current moon phase and traditional Hawaiian day name on the lock screen or through Force Touch on the app icon. Additional location-based information such as parallactic angle, moon visibility above the horizon, and rise and set times are shown if location details are available.
  • iOS14 users can incorporate new widgets onto home screen pages to showcase upcoming phase milestones, current Hawaiian day name with fishing/planting tips, or a monthly moon phase calendar format.
  • Southern hemisphere users can adjust settings to account for their location within the app settings under "Hemisphere." The app attempts an automatic setting based on location permission but manual confirmation is recommended.
  • Two iOS permissions are required for optimal app performance. Location Services grant insight into moon-rise/set times and sky orientation relative to device location without tracking user movements or transmitting data externally. A three-kilometer location radius is used with updates beyond 80 kilometers (~50 miles) from the last known position. Notification permission is essential for local alerts preceding key phase milestones (full moon, new moon, etc.), generated internally without external sources.
